Research Triangle Park, NC and Silicon Valley, CA — Catalyzer Ventures has co-led the $6.5 million seed financing of Blaze Energy alongside Propeller Ventures, with participation from Safar Partners, SOSV, Desai Ventures, and Cartography Capital.
Blaze is tackling one of the maritime industry’s most consequential challenges: how to decarbonize a global fleet built to operate for decades without forcing shipowners to make an expensive, irreversible bet on which fuel will ultimately prevail.
More than 80% of global trade by volume moves by sea. Yet as the industry faces mounting pressure to reduce emissions, there remains no clear consensus on the fuel mix that will power the next generation of shipping. For shipowners, committing to a single fuel means committing to its supply chain, infrastructure, economics, and availability for years to come.
Blaze offers an alternative: optionality.
Blaze Energy’s Flex-Fuel Reformer System integrates with existing engine platforms and converts fuels including ammonia, methanol, and LNG into a hydrogen-rich mixture onboard the vessel. This enables emerging fuels to be used with conventional engines while preserving existing infrastructure.
The result is not simply an emissions solution. It is an economic and operational one.
Rather than replacing productive vessels or betting on a single fuel pathway, operators can adapt as fuel prices, availability, infrastructure, and regulations evolve. Blaze estimates that its technology can enable this transition at approximately 20 times lower cost than replacing a vessel outright.
For an industry defined by long-lived, capital-intensive assets, that flexibility matters.
At Catalyzer, we invest in the transition from Breakthrough to Scale, when differentiated technology has been validated and the next challenge is translating innovation into commercial adoption.
Blaze is entering that inflection point.
The company is moving from technical validation into commercial deployment with leading maritime partners. This financing will support marine engine testing in Norway, a commercial-vessel pilot with Lomar Shipping in 2027, expanded operations in the United States and Norway, and a planned newbuild product launch in 2028.
The opportunity is substantial. Blaze estimates a $120 billion market opportunity in maritime alone, with potential applications extending into heavy equipment, mining, transportation, and industrial heat.
“Blaze Energy’s Reformer System offers shipowners a practical, cost-effective pathway to meet increasingly stringent emissions requirements while preserving the value of their existing vessels and infrastructure,” said Kristina M. Johnson, Co-Founder and Managing Partner at Catalyzer Ventures. “With global shipping responsible for roughly 3% of worldwide greenhouse gas emissions, Blaze provides an elegant solution to a difficult challenge: materially reducing emissions without requiring shipowners to replace or fundamentally redesign their fleets.”
